A Successful Summer Camp

Updated: Oct 27, 2018

The Princes[s] Codes just completed its first summer camp, and what a fantastic experience. I enjoyed every minute of it. During this introduction to Python programming camp, the campers taught me how to explain difficult concepts to young kids, many of whom had never been exposed to coding before.

The campers learned material ranging from print statements to more complicated logic involving decisions and loops. It was incredible to see each student grow as a programmer throughout the week, and it was so meaningful to me that many of them cultivated a love of coding and no longer felt intimidated by it. The young girls even wrote “We Love Coding!” on the whiteboard, which was, of course, the goal.

I am delighted that I was able to offer this service and teach young children the basics of programming. In many areas throughout the nation, coding is not taught at schools, so it is difficult to find opportunities to learn. I am glad that I was able to provide an opportunity for some young students to discover this new subject and have fun in the process.

I am impressed with how well the children worked together regardless of gender. Boys and girls alike were proud to wear their Princes[s] codes backpacks with our logo of a crown. Hopefully this is a small step toward a more equal and accepting world.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this camp, and I truly appreciate the positive feedback. I would also like to thank this year’s 2018 Sponsors: Winchester OBGYN, Powhatan School, Winchester Dental Care, Shenandoah Valley Orthodontics, Winchester Cardiology, and Edward Jones-Sean E. Dudley. I am excited to offer more camps next summer, so stay tuned.
